Wheel Nut Indicators 32

A wheel nut indicator is a molded part made of a special plastic material with an indicator edge that is placed on the vehicle’s wheel nuts so that the edge always points toward the center of the adjacent bolt.The principle of operation is clear: If a nut loosens while the vehicle is in operation, the relative position of the indicator edges changes, and this change can be detected very easily—and, most importantly, quickly and simply—by visual inspection, allowing the problem to be corrected immediately.

In addition to this primary function, the nut indicator—thanks to the chemical composition of the material used—can be used to diagnose faults in the vehicle’s bearings, hub, or brakes. As is well known, these types of faults cause excessive heat generation in the area of the wheel’s central mounting. The resulting thermal energy is transferred to the disc wheel, mounting bolts, and nuts. If the nuts are equipped with indicators, they will deform at a certain temperature, which can again be easily detected.

The use of nut indicators in the Czech Republic was approved by the Czech Ministry of Transport through the issuance of Certificate of Approval of Technical Suitability of Vehicle Equipment and Components No. 2944.
