Heating Water in an Electric Kettle—How Does It Actually Work?

Comparison of Water Heating in Different Types of Kettles
With a standard household kettle rated at 230V and 2200W, it takes about 2 minutes. On the other hand, if you’re traveling and have a 12V, 120W kettle, be prepared for a longer wait—it will take 21 minutes to heat the water. For those using a 24V, 250W kettle, heating will take about 11 minutes.
What should you keep in mind when using a kettle in a vehicle?
1. Vehicle voltage: It’s important that the kettle has the same voltage as your vehicle’s system—either 12V or 24V.
2. Connector load capacity: Carefully check whether the outlet or the manual specifies the maximum current (in amperes) or power consumption (in watts) that the appliance can use.
3. Proper connection: If the contact between the outlet and the plug is insufficient, contact resistance may occur, leading to overheating and potential damage to the connector and other components.
Possible Problems and Solutions:
Blown fuses: This can be caused by a damaged appliance, faulty connectors, or an undersized circuit or fuse. Make sure the fuse for the electric kettle is rated at least 15A and that the wiring is properly rated for this current.
Ineffective heating: If the kettle does not heat the water or takes too long to do so, the cause may be using a kettle with an incompatible voltage. A 24V kettle in a 12V system will take a long time to heat or may not heat at all. Conversely, a 12V kettle in a 24V system may cause the fuse to blow. Avoid using 12V kettles in vehicles with a 24V voltage system.
A Bit of Theory:

When calculating the time it takes to heat 1 liter of water from 15 to 100 °C, we neglect other losses, such as voltage drop, appliance efficiency, or energy radiated into the surroundings.
A household kettle with a power rating of 2200W heats one liter of water in approximately 193 seconds (about 3 minutes).
A 12V car kettle with a power rating of 150 W takes about 2,940 seconds (approximately 49 minutes) to heat the water.
A 24V car kettle with a power rating of 300W can do it in 1,704 seconds (about 29 minutes).
By following these simple rules, you’ll ensure not only fast but, above all, safe water heating in your electric kettle.
